How to read a UK welcome offer.
Bonuses can be useful, neutral, or quietly bad. The difference is in five lines of small print. Here’s how to find them in under two minutes.
Find the wagering
“35x bonus” is normal. “35x bonus + deposit” is much heavier — read carefully.
Check the max bet
Most UK bonuses cap stakes at £4–£5 per spin while wagering. Break it and the bonus is voided.
Look at game weighting
Slots usually count 100%, live casino 10% or 0%. The lower it is, the longer wagering takes.
Note the time limit
Most bonuses expire 7–30 days from opt-in. Don’t claim what you won’t use.
The four types of UK welcome offer
Deposit match. Deposit £20, get a £20 bonus. The most common, but also the most weighed down with wagering. Look for matches around 100% with realistic playthrough (under 40x bonus).
Free spins. A fixed number of spins on one or two slots, usually at 10p–20p stakes. Easy to use, often capped at low max winnings.
No-wagering bonuses. Smaller value, but anything you win is real cash. Increasingly common at UK operators and almost always the better deal for casual players.
Cashback. A percentage of net losses returned over a week or month. Less exciting at sign-up, but genuinely useful if you play regularly.
Common traps
- Sticky bonuses — funds you can play with but can’t withdraw, even after wagering.
- Low max-cashout caps — winnings limited to e.g. £100 regardless of the bonus size.
- Country / payment exclusions — Skrill, Neteller and PayPal can disqualify some bonuses.
- Game restrictions — “excluded” lists that quietly remove most popular slots.

Bonus questions, answered.
What does ‘35x wagering’ actually mean?
If you claim a £20 bonus with 35x wagering, you’ll need to bet £700 in qualifying games before the bonus and any winnings can be withdrawn. Slot bets usually count 100%; table games much less.
Are no-wagering bonuses really better?
Often yes. The amount may be smaller, but anything you win is real cash with no playthrough. They’re ideal if you’d rather have £10 to keep than £100 to chase.
Why is there a max-bet rule on bonuses?
To stop players running through wagering quickly with high stakes. Breaking it usually voids the bonus, so check the cap (typically £4–£5 per spin) before you start.
